GENERIC LISTINGS Generic listings in major search engines have historically been used for companies in a "world wide" search. A company that sells a product or service world wide wants to have top generic listings. You can still purchase PPC advertising but compared to "local search" world wide PPC advertising can be so expensive if you don't have everything right you could be losing money instead of making it. PPC advertising is sold in a couple of ways. You pay a price for every "click" sent to your web site, using keywords or keyword phrases. Let's say I live in "Fort Myers Florida" and I need a "plumber". This is what a basic search in Google for "plumber in Fort Myers Florida" looks like. The top and the right side have "sponsored" sites. These are usually PPC (pay per click), so you have to pay each time someone clicks on your link. Your position is determined on who pays the most for that "keyword or phase" and can be very costly local internet marketing. Below are the "local businesses" and top 10 natural" listings..

When you click on them, they just have an address, phone number and a dot on the map. Not very effective internet advertising.
